Lincolndale NY - The weekend started off with a bang. State Champions Bronxville stayed local, St. Anthony's headed for Jersey, Fayetteville-Manlius boys' have successfully reloaded their team yet again, and more as the cross country season opens in New York. We were in Section 1 for the Somers Big Red Invitational, on a very hilly course. Check out what transpired below, and some other local headers as well. Girls Small School Division
The reigning Class C state champs, Bronxville, proved they've returned their full squad with a solid performance. Winning with a score of 19 points, Freshmen Kaitlin Ryan took the race in 19:49. She was joined by 6 of her fellow Bronco's in the top 10, showing the depth the team can put forth. Breaking up the blue was MaryKate O'Meara of Nanuet's second place finish, hitting a 20:00 even mark. In third was the late charging Claire Gomba of Hackley, in 20:02.
Girls Large School Division
For the large schools, Fox Lane put on an impressive showing, lead by second place sophomore Vicky Martinez. However, it was John Jay-Cross River's Isabel Page who went the fastest of the day, winning in 19:42. Led by her fast finish, they tied for second place in the team competition, pushed down to third on sixth-man decision. That second place team was Arlington, running without top harrier Bella Burda.
Boys Small School Division
Despite being the small schools division, the competition was no less fierce. Nanuet senior Kyle Chesterman started his final year right, winning in 17:08, also leading his team to the team title. Close behind him was Grant Sheely of Dobbs Ferry, an early contender to go to States for Class C. Rounding up the top three was Adrian Zias of Irvington.
Boys Large School Division
Arlington impressed in the biggest of the boys races on Saturday, winning both the team title, and the individual crown. Senior Steve Morrison put in a 16:48min performance to win by a solid thirty seconds, with fellow senior Tom Wimmers taking third. Splitting the pair was Fox Lane's Ben Barton.
