CIAC Class Championship Wrap-up: Streakers and Shockers

Boys Class L

Xavier ran away from Hillhouse by 86.5 to 54 in a battle of the last two Class L winners. The duel between the two teams began in the first race of the morning as the Falcons edged the Academics by .04. The team contest took a back seat to the individual action going on that got pumped up to historic proportions.

The clapping was ringing out for Gary Moore Jr. each time he stepped into the shot put circle, and his second throw crashed down out at 64-1.25 to break Mel Taylor's 53-year-old state record. Moore's teammate Ralphael Hawkins took the 55m and 300m and almost pulled out the win as the anchor in the 4x200m. Gavin Sherry almost got a state record in the 1600m but he settled for Class LL meet records in both the 1600m and 3200m while also getting Conard off to a commanding lead on the first leg of the 4x800m as his brother Callum wrapped up the win on the anchor while also getting silver medals in the two distance races.

Xavier dominated the meet off of relay wins in the 4x200m and sprint medley relay, but it also got wins from Eamon Burke in the 1000m and Hunter Feitel in the pole vault. Naugatuck also looked sharp with a win by LeoAngel Lopez in the 600m and then the victory in the 4x400m. Ryan Johnson launched a CT #2 leap to take the long jump, and CT's top high jumper Timothy Watson limited his activity to three attempts on the day to take the gold at 6-4.
