CIAC Class Championship Wrap-up: Streakers and Shockers

Girls Class M

Although Sheehan's guys had won a Class M title back in 2000, the girls had never gotten to the top until last Friday when they edged Weston 68.75 to 63. The Titans struck gold just once in their specialty CT #1 4x200m event, but the silver flowed in as Erin Brennan was 2nd in the pole vault and long jump, Amanda Castaldi was 2nd in the tough 55m and 55H double, and Olivia Platt was 2nd in the 600m. Weston took relay wins in the 4x400m and 4x800m, and CT #1 pole vaulter Ellison Weiner reached 11-6.

One athlete who carried off a lot of gold was Mariella Schweitzer as she won the 55H and 300m on the track and the long jump in the field, and she sits as CT #1 in the hurdles and LJ and #2 behind Alanna Smith in the 300m. Bethel also had some good fortune as Ava Graham won the 1000m and joined her sister Talia as part of the winning sprint medley relay team while Rosa Linda Volpintesta was capturing the high jump.  Kelly Jones took the 1600m and was 2nd in the 3200m to Peyton Bornstein, who continues to push down her time there on the season. Freshman Kate Littler impressed in the 600m in a race that featured three freshman in the top 5. Finally CT #1 Marina Perry took an easy win in the shot put as she got set for what promises to be a great competition in the Open.
