Mary Cain (Unattached, NY) had set the HS record the year before, running 4:28.25 for second place in the professional field. But her crowning moment would come her senior year of high school, where she would unleash an unstoppable kick to capture the crown. Also in the field was another high schooler, Alexa Efraimson (Camas, WA), who would run to sixth place with her 4:32.15, which was then US No. 2 All-Time.
