Complete Millrose Mile Preview, Plus Four More Things We're Excited For

34th Annual New Balance Girls' Invitational Mile

Favorites

Breakdown: It's been no secret that Katelyn Tuohy has been on a roll this year, and the Millrose Mile is another major notch on the road to Legendary Status in the annuls of the sport.  While other athletes may have opted for the Pro Race, Tuohy wants a HS Title first before exploring those options.  The meet record is 4:41.84, while the sophomore National Record is 4:43.23.  Both are on the radar.

Challengers

Breakdown: If there is one person in the country who can challenge Katelyn Tuohy right now, it would be Kelsey Chmiel.  Chmiel, once thought as a solid 3000m runner, demonstrated at Loucks last spring, that a 4:40 mile time can appear when needed.  It'll be needed here, and maybe even then some.  But after handling the rest of the country at NXN, and then the rest of the commonwealth in Edinburgh, Chmiel has only lost to one athlete her entire Junior campaign.  Bringing down the distance will surely make the race closer.

Another New Yorker is there to watch as well.  Katherine Lee is the quickest in the field, having run 2:04 in the 800m last Spring.  She's no slouch in the Mile either, routinely under 4:48 in relays and open events.  Caught in the crossfire of New York Distance Running is Anne Forsyth, whose run 4:56 this year.  And then there is Marlee Starliper, who can hold her own in PA.  She ran against Tuohy at the Trials, but may do even better with someone to stay with here.

Dark Horses

Breakdown: In many races, even NBIN, a 4:50 would almost guarantee a podium slot.  But for Millrose, it'll be all about how many can dip under that mark to become contenders.  Our pick for the biggest jump?  Gabrielle Wilkinson qualified back in December, and has since moved to the top of the leaderboards in the 1000m.   That could boost her stock in the race significantly.
