Boys Race
This race has nearly 20 athletes under that magic number of 4:20. So the preview has to drill down even further, looking at 4:15 being the benchmark of becoming the favorite. Chris Romero (Voorhees, NJ) is the only one unde 4:10, running a 4:09.74 in the 1600m last year. Closest to him is Mason Gatewood (Saint Anthony's) with his 4:12.87 for the full mile. PA gets in the tri-state battle as well, with Liam Conway (Owen J. Roberts, PA) bringing his 4:13.00 for 1600m to the mix. These three would seem to be the favorites, granted, if they are in shape. Gatewood is the Manhattan Easterns States Champ, and a Millrose Title would be the Indoor equivalent. He'll have some extra motivation on the startline.
Behind them, there is a trio in the 4:15's. Teddy Meredith (Hopewell Valley) and Brian Hill (CBA, NJ) both carry their personal best from last spring, while Justin Cornetta (Hunterdon, NJ) missed last year's Outdoor season. His mark comes from Sophomore year, so what kind of jump can he make?
There are legions more who could be in the mix, but at the same time, not make the seeded heat. Elijah Claiborne's (Northport) twin brother already made the big show at the Hispanic Games, and he'll be looking to join him. Greg Fusco (Somers) has taken 3rd for two qualifying races in a row, and would like to move up. There are plenty of NXN and Foot Locker qualifiers here, looking to make their big move. It is anybody's race.
