Shoreham Leads Greatest 3000m Team Performance In State History

On Day 1 of the Section 11 State Qualifiers, the team from Shoreham-Wading River produced one of the most impressive distance races in State History.  For the 3000m, Shoreham swept the top three spots, all athletes under 10mins, averaging 9:44.95.  Led by Katherine Lee at 9:36.04, a new US #4, she was followed by teammates who went US #7 and US #15 as well.  Ironically, only two will move on to the State Meet in this event.  Shoreham also had another athlete, take 3rd overall in the 800m at 2:16.

Shoreham is no stranger to big team performances.  They ran strong at the Manhattan Invite in XC, and finished third at the NXN-NY Regional.  Many thought they would receive at At-Large bid, but it was not too be.  They went on to win the 4xMile Indoors by a significant margin, and continue success outdoors.

Shoreham nows holds the distinction of being the only team to get three girls under 10mins in a single race.  Not only that, they are also the only team to do so in a single season.  Fayetteville-Manlius came closest to do so in 2010 (see below), while North Shore almost did so as well using a 3000m Steeple time (also below).  But no team has accomplished it before, let alone the three-woman average.

The mark brings more fame to Section 11, which already held a similar record on the guys side.  Northport famously became the first team to get three guys under 9mins for the full 2-Miles, when Mikey Brannigan and the McGowan twins did so at New Balance Outdoor Nationals in 2014.
