Nike Cross Regionals Brings Out The Best In New York State

Boys NXN-NY Teams

Breakdown: Death, taxes, and Manlius performing at NXN-NY.  Like the year before, after not making it out of Sectionals, Manlius comes back at NXN Regionals to book their trip to Portland.  This will be their 11th trip, matching their girls teams appearance numbers.  The key here was consistency.  Their Speed Ratings remained exactly what they had been all season, while many other teams saw steps back.  After not racing for three weeks, and being all but out of the conversation, Manlius comes back to win the entire regional by 31 points.

For Liverpool, their third ran back about nine seconds from the State Meet, but was actually able to move up in the field.  Their fifth also saw a setback, but the work of the front runners more than made up for it.  For Corning, who had since been undefeated, the larger crowd gave less room to run in the middle of the field.  Their fourth runner from States had an off day, which pushed the projections out the window.

This mark's Liverpool's fourth trip to NXN.  Because of varying field dynamics, they may fare better out west.  Their Top 3 are projected to score 3-6-25 based on the regional ratings.  But for the fourth year in a row, the Syracuse area is sending two teams to NXN.

Story Update

In the above interview, an emergency surgery is mentioned.  More details can be found below.

"On Thursday morning, Max Perry was practicing with the team in full health ahead of NXN-NY.  Later that day, Perry began running a high fever.  Admitted to the hospital that evening, he was diagnosed with a severe Staph infection in his chest.  After treatment, it was discovered that the infection had spread to his knee after contracting MRSA, an antibiotic-resistant strain of Staph.  As the infection became life-threatening, it was clear that emergency surgery would be needed to remove the abscess in his knee.  Perry, in the hospital Saturday afternoon, waited until the moment he heard of his team's success at the Nike Cross Regionals, before undergoing surgery to prevent further spread of the dangerous infection.

Perry remains in intensive care as the situation is closely monitored.  Doctors speculate that his daily fitness regimen alongside his specific healthy diet, basic tenants of a Stotan lifestyle, may have played a significant role in his resistance to the typically life-threatening sequence of events.  On Saturday afternoon, four hours away, Perry's older brother led his team to a Nike Regional victory.  The team only ran 6 runners, keeping a place in the lineup for Max"
