Greenwich's Brynne Wright led the way for the champion Witches, who won the title by packing their top four runners between the 7th and 16th place spots.

This Year's Outlook
In 2014 the Witches started restocking the ranks in a youth movement that culminated last year in the team's first state championship since 2009. The fifth overall crown for Greenwich was a nice send-off for Tori Spiezio in her final season of a career that saw her take top-3 States places as a freshman and sophomore. Now the main job of defending the title lies solely in the hands of the three freshmen -- Brynne and Brooke Wright and Emma Cronin -- who took over as the lead Witches last year as 8th graders and who along with Spiezio formed the coven that placed 7th, 11th, 14th, and 19th and packed enough of a punch to win the state championship. With sophomores Annabel Gregg and Lucia D'Acchile in support, the young Greenwich squad will again enter the season as the top team in Class D. But a repeat championship is no sure thing, because out west the Witches' longtime D rival Maple Grove also has a youth movement going on that could result in still another big showdown between the two teams.

This Year's Outlook
An era that started in 2010 when a pair of 7th graders helped lead an insanely young Maple Grove to its first state championship finally ended in 2015 with the graduation of the last remaining member of three-time champion crew, Hope Pietrocarlo, 2013 States individual champ and six-time finisher in the top 5 at States. With their longtime frontrunner gone, the Red Dragons will now have to see how far another young and not very deep group can go after a 3rd place finish last year at States. With a top four of junior Grace Auer, 8th grader Carling Lockwood, and sophomores Riley Caskey and Bryn Mozzi as a core, Maple Grove will enter the season as the chief rival to an equally young Greenwich squad in its quest for a second straight state title.

Margaret Champagne cruised to a third straight top-5 finish at States as she placed 4th to lead Seton Catholic to 5th in Class D.

This Year's Outlook
Like all of the top Class D teams, Seton Catholic lost a long longtime front runner as Margaret Champagne said goodbye after taking a States medal every year of her career and ending it off with a 4th place in 2015 for her 5th place squad. Her departure is a sizeable problem for the Knights, because she was the anchor that you could always use in the preseason to say that even though Seton Catholic only had a couple of known returning runners, you knew that they would get four other runners to team with Champagne to get a pretty high place at States. Now the fate of the Knights appears to lie mainly with the DeJordy family. Sophomore Sofia DeJordy and sophomore Kaylee Amoriell should be back after running at States, but 8th grader Savannah DeJordy saw her final action at Section 7 state qualifiers, and freshman Lea DeJordy missed the 2015 season after running as an 8th grader. What it all means I have no clue, but I am reasonably confident that the Knights will somehow pull together five runners and will end up battling for a top 5 place at States.

This Year's Outlook
Beaver River has been shut out of States since 2011 mainly because of the emergence of Tully, but now the four-time state champions are looking to take advantage of a depleted Black Knights team and use their standard Beaver pack to reclaim the S3-D title. A sophomore top trio of Taylor Moore, Shauna Rice, and Rylee Campeau will be joined by juniors Sierra Kempney and Emily Lighthall to build a group that could stay on top in S3-D for two straight years. And that offers up the possibility of the craziest cheering contingent in the state having a good time for quite a while.

TrumansburgBlue Raiders

Trumansburg 8th-grader Molly MacQueen led the Blue Raiders to a second consecutive Section 4-D title as she held off Seton Catholic-Binghamton's Shayna Will for the victory.

This Year's Outlook
The Blue Raiders are favored for their third straight S4-D title after a 7th place finish at States. Though Trumansburg is not deep and only three of last year's States finishers are back, the Raiders have Molly MacQueen returning as a freshman to lead the team and likely have enough to hold off Elmira-Notre Dame for the sectional crown.
