State of the Action

Not since the epic showdown of All-Time greats in 2011 has a State Meet 1500m been so exciting.

Knowing the field, Emily MacKay got out early. She never let go of the the pace, constantly throttling 5-7m ahead of the chase pack. It kept the pace honest in a field full of kickers, changing the very dynamic of the race.

Behind her was a field of ten runners, all with sub-4:30 abilities. Many would expect MacKay to fade in the concluding laps, but it took until 1200m for them to realize the fade would not come as drastically as anticipated. Anna Flynn moved to the lead, signaling Sammy Watson to do the same. Watson had spent most of the first lap in last place, steadily gaining ground the next few laps. As the bell rang signaling the final lap, Watson made her move, nudging closer to MacKay on every step. At the 200m mark, they were dead even, and a push for the final straightaway sent Watson into the lead. She began to pull away with 75m to go, and saw the finish in sight. With 10m left, Watson relaxed across the line, almost leaving an opportunity for MacKay to close. A much closer finish than anticipated, both girls are now NY #11-12 All-Time for the event, with both coming back next year. Flynn would close for third in a big personal best, while Kaitlyn Ryan would win the D2 State title in 4th.
