Freshman National Record Goes Down At Section 1 Qualifiers

We've already known Section 1 is home to some of the best 1000m runners ever this year. Three freshman are under 2:52, with plenty of upper classmen vying for spots at States as well. But one of those freshman just broke history.

Adriana Pettinelli (Scarsdale) led from the gun, and smashed the old State Record held by Katelyn Tuohy. Tuohy ran 2:47.86 back in 2017, while Petinelli was over a second faster on Sunday. She ran a four second personal best, going 2:46.36, good for NY #6 All-Time. Not only that, it surpasses the National Record set back in 2014, by Sophie Cantine of Washington.

The frosh from Scarsdale has been on a tear this indoor season, already having run 4:32 for the 1500m in the Millrose Mile, en route to a 4:50.69 full distance mark. She's also ranked NY #5 in the 600m, having run 1:33.93 in only her second ever attempt at the distance.

The qualifier sets her up for a strong duel with NY #2 Sophia McInnes (Bayport-Blue Point), who long held the National Leader before Zariel Macchia surpassed it earlier this month.
