State of the Action

It was a matchup all had been waiting for. Izaiah Brown was healthy, and Richard Rose was in the field to challenge. Each athlete knew they would see each other eventually, heading into the finals. They would each have to run hard to win, even though for Rose, it was only a qualifier for the final the following day. The gun went off, and the usual closer Izaiah Brown did something different. He powered from the gun, attacked the backstretch, and hammered the second curve. Coming out of the turn, he had built up enough real estate to scare any competitor. But there was Rose, closing the gap. The footsteps spurred a final charge from Brown, through the line in first, a remarkable and unexpected time on the clock. Brown set a Meet Record, and NY #6 All-Time performance, only .02 off Rose's personal best. The final was set to astound.

And then, something happened. Brown tells the Amsterdam Recorder "My legs felt like they could give out during the race." The decision was made to save the sprinter from the final, unknowingly knocking him out of the rest of the meet. He was informed 15 mins before the start of the race about the State Meet Scratch Rule, but stood by his decision in an effort to be healthy for Nationals, as well as a full Collegiate Career.

Again, in Brown's absence, Rose was able to cruise through the final saving something for the upcoming relay. But for Rose, it would be his first ever State Meet Title, despite being the National Leader 4 years straight in the 600m, as well as running on an All-Time Great 4x400m and 4x800m relay his freshman year. It was a long time coming, and mission accomplished, on his final shot.
