NY Relays To Blow Open The Early Season - Meet Preview

Girls Distance

Spotlight

800m

Coming off a breakout season indoors,

Kaitlyn Ryan (Bronxville) looks to be the top seed in the 800m Invitational. Ryan ran 2:13.3 as an 8th-Grader, before switching focus last year. Her speed has returned, and she will be pushing that mark once again. But she won't be alone. Anna Jurew (Nightingale Bamford) is coming off a win last week at the Mayor's Cup, and has the fastest personal best of the field with her 2:12.30. Could her early season fitness be the deciding factor? Tashay Roberts (Bloomfield, CT) has hit sub-2:20 last spring, and could also put pressure on the lead. Amelia Mahoney (Saratoga) is another name to watch, as her 2:16.53 speed could come in handy.

Mile

With the promise of an Auto-Slot in the Dream Mile, the big names have set their schedules for this one. While the Dream Mile is the same day as the New York State Meet, other states are free and clear.

Lucy Biles (Herriman, UT) will be free and clear of the Utah State Meet by then. She enters the field with highest credentials, finishing seventh at Foot Locker Nationals her junior year, while finishing the same this year at NXN. She'll be looking to redeem her 10th place finish at the Dream Mile last year, with her 4:50 personal best as motivation. But Eliza Rego (La Salle Academy, RI) wants that slot just as bad. She is coming off a National Title in the 4xMile Indoors, where she had the fastest split. Her 4:52.30 will guarantee the pace is honest. Rounding out the sub-5 competitors is Anna Flynn (Ursuline), who has hit in the 4:54 range on the DMR anchor.

3000m

As one would expect with the names in the field, the longest distance race on the track looks to be dominated by the girls of

Saratoga Springs. Estela Smith (Saratoga) looks to be the top seed, with her 10:06 at the State Meet last year, but she'll have strong competition from teammate Spencer Hayes, who ran a 10:20 two mile equivalent Indoors. Outside the Blue Streaks, Crystial Ortiz of Hudson Catholic, NJ, went 10:55 for the 3200m last weekend, which equates to around 10:10. Also in the mix is Hackley's Julia Stevenson, who has a 10:18 to her name. Look for that winning time to be in the low teens.
