Girls Federation Meet Preview |
Individual Breakdown:In a unique turn of events, it seems like three hometown heroes will be trying to fend off the incoming chase packs. Up front, it looks to be a two person battle. Jessica Lawson is the defending Federation Champion. However, Bella Burda may very well be the most experience Bowdoin Park runner in the venues history. She has broken 18-minutes twice. She has just captured her first XC state title, over very much the same field. And she has something to prove. She wants that course record, and has two attempts left to grab it. Yet, Lawson isn't ready to hand over the title. After facing Burda in Canton, Lawson will have to adjust her sit and kick style, to handle Burda's continuous strength speed. How well Lawson adapts may very well determine the outcome of the race. Behind the pair, is another interesting matchup. Of the trio, Abbey Wheeler has the superior course best by a good 15-seconds, set last year at the NXN Regional. However, both Anna Flynn and Carly Benson came down the finishing chute side by side, just barely ahead of Wheeler in Canton. In what was Benson's first high stakes race, she may have fallen off towards the middle. With extra experience under her belt, Benson may be a different runner entirely this weekend. However, Anna Flynn showed she is a big race performer, taking fourth in a final kick over Benson, in a time well above her seed. Also, Bowdoin Park is second nature to the Section 1 standout, while it will be Benson's first time appearing. Could that extra course experience give Flynn the edge? We'll see Saturday. And finally, behind that, Rachel Ludwikowski leads a very strong quartet of challengers. The difference, she leads a strong team, as well as having more experience at Bowdoin than any of her challengers. Katherine Lee took out the race very strong at Canton, and will try to do much the same here. Sage Hurta is looking for a fast time with the big competition, while Danielle Jordan has valuable team points on her mind. All-in-all, this has shaped up to be a great race. |

Team Breakdown:Things are about to get interesting. In a field that is only missing one entrant in our Top 15 State Team Rankings, the battles will be close, and will be telling. Saratoga and Shenendehowa will have one last go at each other before the NXN NY regional. On paper, Shen looks to excel in the better field, however, there are some factors that will be working against them. First, like SPAC, Saratoga is one of the most successful Federation Meet teams ever, winning 20 titles in the past 25 years. Also, despite taking second at the state meet, their 15-second compression was very impressive. Lastly, Shenendehowa's top runners did not run up to their standards at the state meet, and will need to be firing on all cylinders to capture the title. The battle behind the two favorites is even more interesting. Guilderland was ranked 5th in the state, but was unable to make the state meet. They'll be challenged by Suffern, who have lived at Bowdoin Park all season, and looked impressive in the State's merge. While Corning drops off in a bigger field, Elmira looks very competitive as well, despite losing their essential fifth runner mid-season, a key factor that helped them dethrone FM at McQuaid. Rounding out the chase pack is Cornwall, who may have faltered a bit at States, but it doesn't negate their seasons body of work. Roughly ten points separates these four teams. Burnt Hills is the team that toppled Cornwall at the State Meet, and could pull a surprise on people here as well. Anything is possible for Corning with the low scoring number out front as well. cylinders For many teams, the outcome of the meet may have a big influence on post-season decisions. If you have a strong front-runner, but your team finishes fifth, the Foot Locker Regional may be calling your name. However, for Shen and Saratoga, it may be the defining moment for who will be vying for an At-Large spot to NXN. Big implications here. |
