Boys Federation Meet Preview |
Individual Breakdown:This could be a very strong race out front. For those in top group, each falls into one of three categories. Each of the reasons has the ability to push their athletes to the limit for the win. For athletes like Pat Tucker, John Rice, and Conor Lundy, where they place in the top end of the race factors into how well their team performs in the back of the race. The pair met up just a week earlier at the VCP 2.5 mile course. With Tucker taking a lead in the finishing stretches, Rice and Lundy were shoulder to shoulder down the line. The longer distance can make this anyone's race. The second group of athletes, which includes Marco Pompilj, Aidan Tooker, and Noah Affolder, are here for the sole reason of getting experience on the course that will hold NXN-NY Regionals. Pompilj finished well here last year, but would have an off day at the Regional. Tooker qualified for NXN last year on this same course. The wild card is Noah Affolder, who heads into the race unbeaten, and almost untested. Could the extra competition push him to continue his streak? The final group includes those who will say farewell to Bowdoin after the races conclusion. Mikey Brannigan and Benito Muniz have both publicly stated they will be vying for a Foot Locker berth. That makes them extra dangerous, because this makes it their last attempt to move up the Bowdoin All-Time rankings. Albeit a wildcard, Brannigan is sitting at #2 by mere seconds, and has the motivation to make it #1. For Muniz, Bowdoin Park is second nature after four years, and he will hope to leave a lasting legacy on the Section 1 stalwart. For all of these reasons and more, this will be one heck of a race. |

Team Breakdown:Except for two squads, who happen to rank Top 5 nationally, every top tier program in the state will be toeing the line on Saturday. The class of the field will be St. Anthony's, who hasn't brought home the Fed Title to the CHSAA since 1992. They finished third in the Manhattan Eastern's race, which in any other year may have been a disappointment. However, this year, in doing so toppled perennial powerhouse CBA Lincroft, as well as breaking the CHSAA Five Man average course record. While last year, the Friars may have been the surprise third place team at NXN Regionals, this year they look to challenge for an automatic slot. Behind them, it looks to be a battle of the States Merge. Pittsford-Mendon had the safety of running relaxed to capture a Class B crown, and could very well show strong improvement here to move up. Shenendehowa took second in the states merge with a strong compression a week before, and are seeded in the same position heading into the meet. Both Xavier and Fordham look strong to move up into the second spot as well, running well with many of the same teams at the McQuaid Invitational earlier in the season. Behind them, the team scoring is incredibly tight. Guilderland and Ward Melville both missed out on a trip to states due to the small fields in the qualifier, and with the Fed expansion could move up. Warwick and Sachem North are within striking distance. One notable absence in the top ranks is Ithaca, whose top individual Dan Dracup is not listed in the lineup. It serves as a slight reminder that for some, the post season is ever looming. And speaking of which.... As always, who doesn't show up to Feds is almost as interesting as those who do. As demonstrated by States, Fayetteville-Manlius has little impact on the scoring of the meet. At 20 points, their scorers were far enough ahead of the field, they didn't displace many runners anyway. For Liverpool, the decision to not attend Feds was a smart one. Cautiously aware of At-Large politics, they had nothing to gain, and everything to lose by attending. They had beaten St. Anthony's at Manhattan, and to do so at Feds would mean little. Had they lost at Feds, the At-Large decision may have swayed. Just another indication on how the NXN Regionals have changed the face of the Fed Meet over the years. |
