2014 Season Overview for Class D
There are always some givens with girls' Class D: one team will be stocking a big amount of young talent to dominate the class; most of the returning top runners have anywhere from two to five years of eligibility left; almost everybody is from Sections 3, 5 or 6; and no one has a clue about where Seton Catholic - Plattsburgh will find a fourth and fifth runner (but it always does) or where Notre Dame - Batavia is being classified. For 2014, Tully is the young powerbroker, 9 of the top 10 teams are from Sections 3, 5, and 6 (Norwood-Norfolk also rudely showed up at the rankings party), and I have no clue about Seton Catholic's back line and have guessed that ND-Batavia will be allowed to be in D, but who knows? With the stream of fresh talent beginning to slow to a trickle for Maple Grove, Tully used its new home in Class D to unleash its young corps and beat out the reigning champ Red Dragons for the Black Knights' first state title last year. Maple Grove did get a lot of satisfaction from sophomore Hope Pietrocarlo's win at States after two consecutive 3rd places which gave the team its first individual States crown to go with its three team titles. Though no team can be called loaded with talent this year, reigning champ Tully at least has some depth at the top with Ashleigh Crawford, Ellen Jaworski, and Alison Congelli and enough of a supporting cast to make it the big favorite for a repeat title. Beaver River may have more depth than Tully, but at this point there does not appear to be signs that the Beavers will have anyone running at more elite levels. Maple Grove continues to hold on behind Pietrocarlo but needs more fledgling Dragons in the ranks. And up in Section 10, Norwood-Norfolk is intriguing because it just needs some filling out at the back to become a top contender. Last year's 4th place team Greenwich has moved up to Class C. There are almost no seniors in the top group for Class D this year, which is not unusual. With Pietrocarlo's win at States last year, the 2014 contest could pit two former champs against each other for the title, as 2010 winner Sage Hurta of Hamilton enters the season as the top rated Class D runner. Last year's States runner-up, Margaret Champagne of Seton Catholic - Plattsburgh, carries a preeminent family tradition with her, and Tully's Ashleigh Crawford and Ellen Jaworski and Norwood-Norfolk's Kaycie Saucier both wouldn't mind collecting team and individual championships at States. |

2010 States Class D winner Sage Hurta of Hamilton finished 5th in 2013 and is the top rated returning runner for 2014.
Section by Section Class D Overview |
Section | Top Teams | Notes |
1 | Haldane, Alexander Hamilton | Haldane should have enough runners to hold off the Red Raiders. |
2 | Berne-Knox-Westerlo, Maple Hill, Saratoga Central | Greenwich needs to fill out its small squad as usual, but with another pair or two of feet the Witches should be comfortably ahead in S2-D. |
3 | Tully, Beaver River, South Lewis, Cooperstown, Sauquoit Valley, Hamilton | Tully has a decided edge here entering the season, but there are enough teams in the mix that one or two newcomers could change the rankings here. |
4 | Trumansburg, Candor, Southern Cayuga | Trumansburg drops down to S4-D and could be in States top 10 this year. |
5 | Notre Dame-Batavia, Keshequa, Red Creek, | If ND-Batavia is in S5-D, this could be a good battle with reigning champ Keshequa. |
6 | Maple Grove, Silver Creek, Cymer-Sherman-Panama, Barker | Maple Grove could get a bit of a challenge from Silver Creek this year due to graduation losses. |
7 | Seton Catholic-Plattsburgh, Lake Placid, Ticonderoga | Seton Catholic will win if it can get five runners over the line. |
8 | No representatives | |
9 | SS Seward, Eldred | Seward has everyone back. |
10 | Norwood-Norfolk, Brushton-Moira | Norwood Norfolk is on the way up. |
11 | Stony Brook, Pierson | Could be close. |

Tully got its best all-around season's effort at States last year and won impressively, picking up four medals with 3rd, 4th, 12th and 13th places. With the loss of two key seniors, the ranks behind Ashleigh Crawford, Ellen Jaworski, Alison Congelli and Mackenzie Bolt will need to be filled in for the Black Knights to feel safe in a tough S3-D. The big question is after being the Light Green Knights and the Pink Knights the last two States, what color will Tully be this year?
