Meet Info

The New York State Outdoor Championships are headed to Section 9's Middletown High School. Events kick off on Friday, June 7th shortly after noontime, with all times being a bit approximate. Athletes from the NYSPHSAA public schools, CHSAA NYC-area Catholic schools, PSAL NYC-area public schools, and the NYSAIS NYC-area private schools will be meeting to see who can run and jump and throw the fastest and furthest.

At States, both the boys and girls have a total of 19 events to vie in, with 16 being individual competitions and three featuring relay squads. The action is further broken down between the Division 1 championships for the big schools (600 seed size and up) and Division 2 championships for smaller schools. In some events like long-distance races, 4x800m relay, pentathlon, high jump and pole vault, the D1 and D2 athletes compete together to decide the division crowns and the overall federation titles. In the rest of the events, the D1 and D2 athletes compete separately for division championships, and then the top 8 performers are selected to compete for the overall title, most of which are decided on Saturday. So yeah, you can potentially finish 7th in the D1 action and go on to win the overall State championship.

To be honest, States is a mixed bag of great action and big drama that is a bit eclipsed by the specter of all the top teams and athletes that can't be there, either because they're the second and fourth best relay teams in the state but have the top dog in their conference, or the coach would prefer to have the team pointed for Nationals, or you're last year's States highlighter who has subsequently become unattached. But for all who make the trip up to Middletown, be prepared for a totally exhausting day of screaming and pandemonium and maybe that rare big upset.

Synopsis of 2013's Action
While most of the bigger news has been carried over from Indoors, many of the key players have returned from 2013.  Kadecia Baird of Medgar Evers found herself in a favorable position, qualifying in five events, (100m-400m, and both relays), and became the favorite in the three she has chosen.  Sabrina Southerland, who ran impeccably well indoors, has limited her focus to one event and a relay, and leaves open the field in the fifteen.  Suffern has been making waves since indoors, and may be able to be one of the first teams to win two relay titles using almost entirely seperate quads.  Read below for the full breakdowns.

Girls Events
The standings below for each of the 19 events contested at States lists the top overall competitors and then provides the top 6 competitors for the Division 1 and Division 2 contests. The States results generally hew close to the listed projections.  Between the federation, Division 1 and Division 2 titles to hand out, there are a lot of great contests to follow. And in each one of them, when the sweat has dried and the dust has settled, there will be one athlete or team left standing on the winner's podium.

Event Info: 2012 Winner: Kadecia Baird (Medgar Evers) 11.73, State Record: 11.40, Meet Record: 11.72, State Qualifier Mark (FAT): 12.74 (D1) - 13.04 (D2)

State of the Action:

Nobody had broken twelve seconds this year, until the very last qualifier meet of the season.  Although both marks were wind-aided, Kadecia Baird and Kimberly Bailey still come in as the favorites, and Baird is defending champ.

State of the Action:

Baird has been the only one to crack twenty-four seconds in the half lap, and is the defending champion.  It is a safe bet Baird will do well in the final.

State of the Action:

It seems as if Baird is the talk of the meet, but her absence in the 400m opens up the field for many athletes. Maddie Kopp had a great run indoors, both at States and Nationals, and enters the favorite.

State of the Action:

This could very well be anyone's race, as many athletes find themselves within milliseconds of eachother in recent weeks.  It seems those from upstate have the swifter times, and have grown accustomed to racing in the rain all season, so they very well could have the edge.

State of the Action:

Many key players from the 1500m will be coming back for the double distance.  Bella Burda had hit a stellar 9:33.90 indoors, which is NY #5 All-Time, but hasn't hit quite that low this spring.  Gianna Frontera competed well at Penn over the same distance, and may be pulling the favorite duty.

State of the Action:

If you take a national level quarter miler, and ask her to do it over hurdles, you have a very strong candidate for a State Title.   That is where Emma Gallagher finds herself, twice being able to go under sixty-two seconds.

State of the Action:

When you hit forty-one feet, you begin to get a lot of attention from the competition.  Anisa Toppin has had some very long fouls as of late, and if one connects, the state record may be in jeaporady.  Of course, that is if the weather cooperates as well.
