10/7: IAC South Divisional (Newark Valley)
Boys Varsity: Individual Elmira Notre Dame is in the first year of their renewed XC program, and they are already back on the radar with a win at McQuaid from Garrett Butters. Butters and teammate Matt Karee distanced the field, with only Shawn Rutledge(Watkins Glen) able to keep pace. The END duo have run well this year, and they dropped Rutledge over the lone steep hill in the final 800m. Butters finished just ahead of Karee as they cruised to the line in 17:35.7 and 17:36.8. Rutledge finished strong in 17:49.5. Team This race was a showdown between Newark Valley and Watkins Glen, who can be grateful for an END team still looking for depth in their Top-5, or they could be a serious contender for the sectional title. Newark Valley only had 1 athlete in the Top-5, but solid pack running brought another 3 runners in the Top-10. They won over Watkins 37-50, though WG was missing #1 runner-Patrick Hazlitt. |
Girls Varsity: Individual A select group ran togther through the first mile, and it was at that point that Kayla Stewart(NV) put in a surge that distanced all but Chase Yoder(END). Stewart steadily pulled away through the remainder of the course to win uncontested. Kayla's younger sister Sophie Stewart ran a great 2nd half of the race, slowly working her way through the leaders, closing the gap to Yoder, and moving past for a 1-2 finish for Newark Valley and the sisters. Yoder crossed the line shortly after in 3rd. Team Just like the boys race, this was a Newark Valley/Watkins Glen battle to be replayed multiple times in the coming weeks. A 1-2 finish from the Stewart sisters, and a 3rd athlete in the top-10 was enough to give Newark Valley the win over Watkins 39-51. |

10/7: IAC North Divisional (Groton 2.9mi)
Boys Varsity: Individual This race would be a rematch between Ben Eisenhut(Lansing) and Evan Whittaker(Trumansburg). They most recently went head to head at McQuaid, where Eisenhut won the race and finished 20s ahead of Whittaker in 3rd. Surprisingly, Whittaker turned the tables at Groton with a substantial 30s margin of victory over Eisenhut. Whittaker's winning time of 16:33 was 40s faster than his winning time on this course a few weeks ago. Team Marathon had a solid race at McQuaid, and they were led by Dylan Brickner in 4th, but they were still unable to match Trumansburg's depth in their 1-4 runners. Trumansburg took the win 25-46. |
Girls Varsity: Individual Bethany Murphy(Southern Cayuga) won on this course a few weeks ago and won on her home course last week. She added to her streak by winning on the Groton course for the 2nd time this season Nearly 30s faster in 20:59. Leah Forehand(Groton) was the closest contender in 21:21. Megan McIntyre completed the Top-3, and led the Trumansburg pack over the line. Team Trumansburg completed the Divisional sweep with a win from their girls team that is still without their #1 runner. They aren't rushing in back early as their focus now turns towards a run at states. Groton has been improving all season, but they met their match in Lansing. The two teams both scored 49 points. Lansing can thank Helen Moore for highlighting the importance of the 6th/7th runner, and being the deciding factor for them in the tie breaker. |

10/7: STAC East - CV State Park
Boys Varsity: Individual A trio from Oneonta separated themselves from the rest of the field, and moved ahead to finish 1-3 with a decent gap back to the rest of the finishers. They finished Logan Mancuso-17:37, Sam Baskin-17:39,Jacob DePauw-18:06. Team Oneonta has been progressing well this season, shown with their strong 1-3 finish in this race. They took an easy 1st place, 27-54 over Chenango Forks. Oneonta is currently ranked 2nd in the Class C Section 4 Rankings. Sectionals is shaping up to be a very tight race with the top 5-6 teams very close to each other. With Oneonta's 1-3 running well together, for them, it will come down to having a good race from their 4th and 5th runners.
================================================ |
Girls Varsity: Individual Kaylee Stone(Windsor) has won nearly every race she has run this season, including McQuaid. She had no trouble adding to that streak with a 20:26 win. She had a gap of over a minute back to Kristen Igo(Chenango Valley) in 2nd with a 21:44. Katie Flynn(Chenango Forks) completed the Top-3 in 21:52. Team The girls race was close between the Top-3 teams. CV-42 Oneonta-50 CF-57. Oneonta and CV both had their scorers all finish in the Top-15. The two teams alternated finishers, with CV gaining the 8 point margin of victory by placing their top-5 1-2 spots ahead of Oneonta's corresponding finishers.

9/30:STAC West - Horseheads
Boys Varsity: Individual Dan Dracup(Ithaca) has firmly established himself as the top runner in Section 4 through the 1st month of the season. He crossed the line in 16:22, followed closely by two Corning runners: Jared Moore-16:30, Brian Bates 16:33. Team With most of the Ithaca scorers not racing hard, Corning easily took the win with a 30+ point margin over Elmira in second. Ithaca came into the season as the heavy Class A favorites, but a strong showing from the Corning boys at McQuaid has them Ranked much closer, and will be an interesting matchup to watch through October. |
Girls Varsity: Individual In a McQuaid replay, new course record holder Jess Lawson(Corning)-17:49 comes in over Abbey Wheeler(Elmira)-18:07. With Natalie Rogus(Corning) next in 18:54. Team Unless you've been hiding under a rock, you're likely aware of the major upset that occured this weekend, and since then the Interwebs have been exploding with the Elmira Upset over FM: Run Junkie MS US Recap MS NY Recap. After handing FM their 1st loss to a NY team in 9 years, Elmira move up to #2 in the new State Rankings. With Jessica Thatcher resting after a tough weekend, Corning capitalized and took a narrow victory 25-31. |

9/30: STAC Metro Champs - Union Endicott(2.9mi)
Boys Varsity: Individual The Metro Champs turned into a Maine-Endwell showcase. Dan Schaffer, currently Ranked 1st in Section 4 Class B, and 2nd overall, crushed the course in 15:43. Just a few seconds off the record. His teammates rounded out the top-3. 2nd-Grayson Hoteling, 16:34, and 3rd-Nick Taylor, 17:00. Being a likely preview for the Class B Sectionals race, the battle is on for the 5 available individual spots for state. After the ME contingent, the Kozarski's(UE) placed 4th and 5th. The Vestal of duo of Rani Marhaba-7th and Colin Tyrell-8th were the next finishers outside of the ME block. Team For Maine-Endwell, this result came as no surprise. They have been a dominant force with a 23 year 73-5 division record. Since moving into the metro devision, this is their 7th championship title in a row. While the battle last year at Sectionals between Corning and M-E was facinating to watch, Corning has returned to the loaded Class A division. It now would take a disaster on race day for M-E to miss out on the team spot for states.
Varsity Boys 2.9 Mile Run Team Scores |
Girls Varsity: Individual The girls side had a much more exciting race and mixed finished order. Notably absent was Top Ranked Emily Mackay(U-E). Vestal claimed the top spot with Abby Tabuntschikow winning in 20:05. She was followed by Krista Kicsak(ME)-20:16, and Maggie Rose Pelella(Bing)-20:25. Team The team race was also much closer. Maine-Endwell managed to sweep the team titles, and claim their 2nd Championship in a row for the girls. A tight finish from their top-3 gave them the edge over Vestal, along with some helpful displacement from their 6th runner over Binghamton. A lot can happen in October, and this bodes well for an excellent race at Sectionals.
