Bronxville’s Mary Cain finished second in the 1,500 meters at the USA Junior Championships Sunday in Eugene, Ore., then found out that she is too young to compete at the Pan Am Games next month and also too young to compete at the World Youth Championships this summer, effectively ending the most proflic freshman campaign of any runner to put on spikes in New York State.


Cain clocked 4:23.59 to finish second behind Florida University’s Cory McGee. But Cain, who is 15 years old, is too young to compete in the Pan Am Games. IAAF regulations state that no athete under the age of 16 on December 31, 2011 is eligible to enter. The same is the case for the World Youth Trials this weekend in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
