Mel Mosley chose Southern University for two solid reasons. Coach Brian Johnson offered him a scholarship and because he offered his twin brother Manny one too.


Just like that, Mosley, the state 400 champ, will be the cornerstone of a New York-heavy freshman recruiting class that will head down to Louisiana in the fall to help resurrect a program that once perennially produced NCAA national-quailifiers when Johnson was a collegiate star.


Middletown could send as many as four athletes down – the core of the Middies team – Mel and Manny Mosley and Adam Abdur-Rahman have already signed. Sprinter Web Pierre is also considering Southern. Southern University also signed Boys & Girls senior Daniel Simon.


Johnson said he hopes to build an all-freshman 4x400 that can run under 3:10. Middletown, with the Mosley twins and Web Pierre, clocked 3:13.98 at the state championships.
