Battle for 1,500: Cain breaks State Rec, Cuffe, Margey post fast times

Bronxville freshman Mary Cain continued her unbelieveable season, setting the New York State record in the 1,500. She clocked 4:23.1 at the Somers Invitational Saturday. On the same day, Cornwall star Aisling Cuffe set the Section 9 1,500 record at the Crusader Relays in 4:23.8 while Kelsey Margey of Harborfields settled for a meet record at the St. Anthony's Invitational in 4:26.54, setting the stage for what could be a historic championship final at the New York State Championships next month.

LINCOLNDALE -- Mary Cain went out fast, as she does in most races. She pulled ahead of the competition, creating a gap between herself and Arlington's Hayley McMahon.

 

The Bronxville freshman finished her first lap around the Somers High School track in 64 seconds Saturday. Eleven hundred meters later, Cain had broken the state record in the girls 1,500 with a Section 1 record-shattering time of 4 minutes, 23.2 seconds at the Joe Wynne Somers Lions Club Invitational.
