If there is a perfect way to earn a name for yourself, there couldn’t be one better than taking down on of the best quarter-milers in the country in a matchup that includes the biggest rivalry in New York City track and field.

Medgar Evers junior Sandrae Farquharson did both. She earned the lead in the first 200 meters of the girls invitational 400 and held firm

 

 

to the finish while Chamique Francis, the outdoor nationals runner-up, nipped at her heels.  Farquharson finished in 54.55 Saturday at the Hispanic Games, the fastest time in the country this season, while Francis was second in 55.31.

“Basically, I just paced myself,” Farquharson said. “I took a quick look over my shoulder to see how close (Francis) was and I knew I was OK.”
