Drive phase. Transition. Finish. Potomac (Md.) junior Ronald Darby made it sound that simple when he broke the 55-meter meet record at the Hispanic Games Saturday.
Darby clocked 6.28 seconds to dominate his event and improve his national leader. His record crushed the previous mark of 6.36 shared by Camden’s Jamar Ervin in 2001 and Terrius McMillen of Newburgh in 2006.
“I felt ok,” Darby said. “I didn’t feel perfect. I never feel perfect.”
And despite that Darby’s time is the 55-performance in the Armory’s history. There have been five sub 6.30 performances at the New Balance Track and Field Center, all of which were 55-meter “en-route” times in 60-meter races.
“I just wanted to win,” the junior said. “I was only running to win.”
