    Put 100 candles on the cake - the Coney Island Racewalk has reached the century mark.

   “Tra-dition, tra-dition, tra-dition” was the melody of the day as Brooklynite Alexis Davidson and Clinton, Ct. resident Maryanne Daniel became history-makers.  He led the men and she led the women in the Sunday race up and down the storied Coney  boards. 

     They crossed the line winners in the race that was as much celebration of the event’s 100th birthday as tribute to the ongoing allure of Coney Island itself.

    Held under the handicap-head start system, Davidson covered four circuits around a 2.5-mile boardwalk loop course in one hour, 38 minutes, 31 seconds.  Mrs. Daniel took 1:39:59 and wound up third over-all.

    But, thanks to that handicap-start  system, they weren’t the day’s fastest - those honors went to Long Islander Loretta McGovern (1:31:42) and White Plains, NY resident Bill Vayo (1:33:37.)
