Kyler Merber runs 3:58.52 mile

Columbia University sophomore Kyle Merber won the Columbia Last Chance meet today at The Armory in 3:58.52 leading four runners under four minutes.

 

Merber ran for Half Hollow Hills West on Long Island, winning the Millrose Games his senior year. 

Also running under four minutes were Tony Jordanek (unattached) in 3:58.80, Riley Masters (Maine) 3:59.07, and Kyle Heath (unattached, Syracuse University, Victor HS, NY).  Riley missed the auto qualifying time of 3:59.00 by .07 seconds.  FULL RANKINGS HERE

 

The mile at the NCAA Division One meet has sparked a lot of conversation this year as it appears that for the first time ever athletes that broke 4 minutes in the mile will not qualify for the meet since so many men have achieved that standard this season.

 

There has been much talk about the role that oversized tracks have played in this sub four onslaught and wether or not 200m banked tracks should be counted as equal to 300m oversized tracks, as they are now.

 

No matter the size of the track, it was great to see two New York high school graduates break 4 on the same night.
