In August, longtime Staten Island journalist, George Kochman, passed away. He was a legend around the oval as both a coach, and a writer. George contributed to many outlets, MileSplit included. His articles can be found here, including his penultimate feature detailing the long standing Mile State Record held by Matt Centrowitz. We last spoke to George at the 2024 Penn Relays, where he was ready to give some historical context to one of our most recent articles.
There would be no better person to pay tribute to George than his longtime friend and colleague, Derek Alvez, also a former MileSplit contributor. He details a moving tribute to his friend-in-track before his memorial service, which can be found below.
