Outlook: On a streak of qualification since 2001, that spans Classification changes and generations of athletes, looks to continue in 2023. Not only that, they have a young squad, all of which will return in 2024. They're the reigning State Championships, winning by 40 points, and bring back all but one from that team.

Pleasantville (Panthers)

States Teams: 2022 (C-2nd)

States Individuals (Top 10 finishers): Libby Lazare (2007, C-8th) (2009, C-10th), Ciara Shingler (2022, A-5th)

Last Year's Summary: 2nd in States C, 1st in Sectionals

Outlook: It looks to be a rematch at the top for Pleasantville, as they too bring back all but one of their athletes from their Silver-Medal team in 2022. A well-balanced squad, they have a strong sophomore class to build upon for years to come.

Last Year's Summary: 2nd in Sectionals

Outlook: Only eight points separated the Broncos from a return to the State Meet, and the race is on once again in 2023. They lost two seniors from that squad, but have the depth to remain competitive. They're doing the chasing for the first time in a long time here, but it might just be the motivation needed to get back on the bus.

South Jefferson (Spartans)

States Teams: 1995 (B-5th), 1999 (B-6th), 2000 (B-5th)

States Individuals (Top 10 finishers): Lawanda Clark (1980, C-10th), Nicole Lister (2000, B-4th) (2003, B-1st) (2004, B-1st), Brittany Burns (2005, B-6th), Alexa Doe (2019, B-10th)

Last Year's Summary: 2nd at Sectionals

Reese Roberts1014-77
Chloe Abbott1122-67
Hannah Hathway1217-57
Sophia Watts1238-42
Brooke Perry1140-19

Outlook: It should be a very competitive Sectional Race, but one where Jeff has the slight advantage coming into the Season. It's been 23 years since they've made the State Meet, and the drought may be coming to an end in the upcoming year.

Adirondack (Wildcats)

States Teams:

States Individuals (Top 10 finishers): Erica Bourgeois (2005, C-9th)

Last Year's Summary: 3rd at sectionals

Roster

NameGradeSectionals PlaceStates PlaceSeason TR
Cora Hinsdill10114109
Eliana Pitts1043887
Kaylee Mathis128-78
Johannah Northrup1013-72
Leigha Yaddow1053-32
Rya Pond1043-36

Outlook: On paper, the girls of Adirondack and South Jeff are dead even in the Class C team competition in Section 3. The difference comes at the 5th position. If Adirondack can find that "plus one," the race completely changes, and this one turns into a toss-up.

James O'Neill (Raiders)

States Teams: 2014 (C-10th), 2018 (C-10th), 2019 (C-5th), 2021 (C-7th), 2022 (C-3rd)

States Individuals (Top 10 finishers): Amy Stromberg (1977, B-8th), Brandy Price (1989, B-10th)

Last Year's Summary: 7th in States C, 1st in Sectionals

Roster

Erin Smith1027370
Amelia Gash1167162
Kaelyn Mitroka935174
Maryann Kick11--60
Alexandra Gash1059557

Outlook: O'Neill is a well-balanced team that should do well in Section 9. Their compression will be to their favor, currently looking to be kept at just under 60-seconds for 1 through 5.

Cazenovia (Lakers)

States Teams: 2010 (B-3rd), 2015 (C--5th), 2022 (C-5th)

States Individuals (Top 10 finishers): Clara Rowles (2014 C-4th) (2015 C-5th) (2016 C-6th)

Last Year's Summary: 5th at States C, 1st at sectionals

Roster

Maeve McGreevy1066079
Dinah Gifford12125271
Zoey Gagne12188958
Olivia Wong1230-47
Haylee Stearns102910644

Outlook: Losing two athletes to graduation is rough in the smaller classes, but the nucleus of their State-Qualifying team from the year before is still here. Development of new talent will go a long way, in what should be a competitive Sectional competition.
