Plainview, NY - Representatives from the Nassau and Suffolk County Track Coaches Associations, NSCHSSA, and USATF Long Island have come together to select the All Long Island athletes for the 2021-2022 indoor track and field season. Performances from throughout the season were analyzed, discussed, and debated with an emphasis placed on achievements attained in this season's championship meets.
Three athletes were selected for each individual running and field event to comprise 1st, 2nd, and 3rd team All Long Island. Athletes who could have qualified for selections in multiple events were assigned one selection in their most outstanding event. The committee has also awarded 1st, 2nd, and 3rd team All Long Island selections in the 4x200, 4x400, 4x800, sprint and distance medley relays.
The return to indoor track and field was another successful crusade in the storied history of Long Island track and field. Two athletes who created their own chapters in that saga were Ryan John (Valley Stream North) and Leeann Redlo (Bayport-Blue Point) who earned our selections as the Most Outstanding Athletes of the Season.
Ryan John spent the majority of his season leaping through the air in each of the jumping disciplines comprised within the indoor track and field schedule. His triple jump performance of 47-7 was the furthest launch of the season in the state by nearly an entire foot. In addition to winning the State Championship in that event, he also rounded out his season ranked NY #4 in the long jump (22-9 ¼) and NY #8 in the high jump (6-2). Leeann Redlo echoed those achievements in the jumping events, finishing as the state leader in the high jump with a clearance of 5-7. Additionally, she ranked in the Top 10 in New York in both the long jump (5th; 18-8 ¾) and triple jump (9th; 38-4). On the track, Redlo also claimed NY #2 in the 55H, clearing the distance and barriers in 8.15 - just five one-hundreths of a second outside of NY #1.
On the sprints side, we recognize Myles Small (Holy Trinity) and co-recognition of Analisse Batista (Huntington) and Kate Del Gandio (Mt. Sinai) as the performers of the season. Small claimed a pair of NY #1 performances with his efforts in the 200 (22.03) and 300 (33.97). His performance in the 300 earned him All-State honors at the NY State Championship. In that same meet, Batista (600) and Del Gandio (55H) earned individual State Championships of their own. In their respective events, they each only finished off the winner's spot on the podium only once during the season and established themselves as elite competitors in the nation.
In regard to the distance runners, the committee selected Gavin Ehlers (Westhampton Beach) and Zariel Macchia (William Floyd) as the best of Long Island this season. With this recognition, Ehlers has now claimed the Most Outstanding Runner in the distance running discipline in all three competitive seasons (cross-country, indoor and outdoor track and field). This season, he ranked NY Top 10 in four distance events including 10th in the 1000 (2:31.40), 3rd in the mile (4:16.06), 7th in the 3200 (9:05.70), and 1st in the 5000 (14:55.27). Macchia ran down a similar path this season, running off her own set of NY Top 10 performances in the distance events. During her indoor campaign, she finished NY #5 in the 1000 (2:51.73), #3 in the 1500 (4:30.01), #5 in the 1600 (5:09.54), #2 in the mile (4:48.64), and #3 in the two mile (10:17.09).
Finally, in the field events, we have selected Alexandra Kelly (Rocky Point) and Nicholas Lourenco (Saint Anthony's) as our performers of the season. Kelly made a tremendous impact on the sand pits around the state finishing as the New York State Champion in the triple jump and an All-State competitor in the long jump. Her leaps of 40-9 (triple jump) and 18-5 ¾ ranked her 2nd and 6th respectively in the state with all performances from the season taken into account. Lourenco missed being the state leader in the pole vault by a single inch, with a season best of 15-6, but claimed the individual championship in the event at the New York State Championship meet. He was also named the Most Outstanding Athlete of the season previously during the 2021 Outdoor Track and Field season.
In conclusion, the committee also recognizes St. Anthony's High School as our selection for the Long Island Indoor Track & Field Team of the Season on both the boys' and girls' sides.
The Long Island Track and Field Coaches Association would like to congratulate all of our All Long Island athletes on their memorable and successful indoor track and field campaigns. Future All Long Island selections for track and field will be made annually after the conclusion of each season.
