Binghamton's Alexis Daniels was really feeling it at Section 4 State Qualifiers on June 2, 2016 at Vestal HS. She went more than three feet further than her personal best in the discus to win the event with a toss of 160-4, the 7th best all-time mark in state history. And though she would get a best of 137-2 a week later at States, it would still be enough to sweep up the D1 and Championship titles there. But her big news at S4 SQ came in the shot put. Her top throw of 50-7.5 was the first ever to top 50 feet and was 10 inches more than the previous state record and 13 feet further than the 2nd place athlete at the meet. Daniels' distances at States were a little more modest at 44-11.75 to win the D1 title and then 46-5 in the Championship event that she won by more than 6 feet.
Before Daniels went past the 50 foot barrier, the record was held by Lancaster's Melissa Kurzdorfer who in her senior year in 2010 threw 49-9.5 at the Hartford Public meet where she also broke the NY hammer throw record with a toss of 192-8. At the time of her graduation, Kurzdorfer held all but the freshman record for the top class marks in the shot put. When Kurzdorfer got her shot put record, she topped by 1 inch the mark of 49-8.5 set way back in 1984 by Bellport's Cheryl Klein in an early season meet at the Patchogue Invite.
