Boys Find Triumph At New Balance Nationals - Recap

Boys All-American Individuals

  • What a weekend for Jaheim Jones (Lourdes).  He took 6th place in the 100m final, with a wind-legal 10.53, plus a wind-aided 10.45 in the prelims.  Doubling back to the 200m, he took third in the 200m with a wind-aided 20.82.  His 100m time puts him at NY #5 All-Time, as well as an All-Conditions #2 All-Time in the 200m.
  • There was craziness in the 400H.  State and National Leader Ryler Gould (Newburgh) got off to a bad start, where Jaheim Dotson (Longwood) and Sean Hewitt (Francis Lewis) would pick up the slack, taking 4th and 6th respectively.
  • Anthony Brodie (Christopher Columbus) led the seeded heat of the Championship 400m from the gun, and was only barely caught at the line.  Still, it lead to a silver medal in the event, as well as a new State Best of 46.88.

  • Long Island's Kenneth Wei (Mt. Sinai) had a busy weekend.  He was 6th overall in the Long Jump, then was one of the first athletes out of the 110H Hurdle Final.  One position ahead was Jesse Parson (New Rochelle), who would run a wind-legal 13.93 in the prelims, finishing one spot off the podium in the final.
  • There was a Long Island hurdler who picked up a medal, albeit it part of the full Decathlon.  John Poplawski (Walt Whitman) finished the ten-event ordeal with 6217 points, considered to be NY #3 All-Time in the event.

  • Also in the jumps, was Meldon Grant (Manhasset) with a big lifetime Triple Jump best of 50-0.75 wind-aided, as the senior took 6th overall.  While the mark is ineligible for record purposes, it is the second furthest All-Conditions jump of the season by a New Yorker.
  • The first event of the weekend, the boys Racewalk, awarded a bronze medal to Jonah Cuestas (Penfield) while later that day, in the 5000m Run, Tyler Berg (Burnt Hills) took home a 6th place medal.
  • Anthony Harrison (Ramapo) may have been shy of that 200-ft mark he has been searching for, he did come away with a 3rd place performance in the Discus at 189-5.
