Top Ten Moments of 2018 - Numbers 8 & 7

#7 - Lily Flynn Kicks Away To US #6 All-Time

Note: We're limited to 2mins of highlights from each State Meet, so we begin the race in progress.

With such a crowded field of national caliber distance runners in NY State, it can sometimes be hard to carve out a little bit history for yourself.  But in a year of National Records, one race may have proved to be more exciting than anything else that happened on the Track all year.

Enter the Girls 1000m run from the Indoor State Meet.  There is more to an exciting race than the finishing clock, which is why some fast runs may not be exciting.  This effort had it all.  A straight shot from the gun from the State Leader Sarah Trainor (FDR).  A chase pack of National Champion runners slowly closing the gap.  And an acceleration in the final lap that rivals any good Olympic-level finishing kick.  It simply was the best, single race on the track all year.

Lily Flynn (Ursuline) would break away from a pack of supremely talented athletes, it record time.  We broke down why her race was so historic earlier in the year, and we highly recommend you go back and read through some of the numbers.

There would be plenty more marquee moments for Flynn to come.  A highlight of which would come at Outdoor Nationals, where she brought her team back from a 7th place anchor exchange in the 4xMile, to bring back Ursuline's first ever National Title.  Her 4:47.95 there would be the fastest split of the day.  But while it surely brought team glory, and an exciting race in it's own right, it would be that Indoor 1000m effort that solidified her place in New York State History.
