He was long considered "The King" well before this race, but Edward Cheserek (St. Benedict's Prep, NJ)  running 8:39.2 indoors cemented his status as a legend of the sport. Also with an FAT split of 8:05.46, it would stand as a national record until a runner named Drew Hunter would come along four years later.  Since then, Cheserek has dropped over a minute off his personal best, running 7:46.85 last January.
