Icahn Stadium, NY - The New York Relays is always evolving, with Meet Records coming every year. For a meet with the history of NY Relays, that comes as no small feat. Sophomore Kelsey Chmiel (Saratoga) accepted that challenge, and broke the meet record for the 3000m. The meet record was previously held by Emily Lipari (Roslyn), at 9:45.71.
Chmiel ran 9:29.01 to surpass that meet record, while also bettering Lipari's NY #9 All-Time performance. That now makes Chmiel ninth in State History, chasing the Sophomore Class Record. Just like much of her career, she's chasing her own school record en route to that State Record, as Nicole Blood currently holds the Sophomore State Record at 9:24.03.
Chmiel already holds the National Record Indoors for both the Freshman and Sophomore 3000m. Her lifetime best came Indoors at the State Meet, where she soloed a 9:26.28 to win the title. Chmiel is setting herself up for a nice battle at State's, where reigning State Champ, and NY #4 All-Time, Jess Lawson, has indicated a desire to double in the 3000m and 1500m.
