Armory Invitational Mile
Who: Four-minute-flat miler DJ Principe (La Salle Academy, RI)
Current PR: 4:00.97
National Record to Chase: Drew Hunter (Loundoun Valley, VA) - 3:57.81 - 2016
Breakdown: It was oh so tantalizingly close at the New Balance Games, where DJ Principe became the third-fastest indoor miler of all time. The two people ahead of him both hail from Virginia, and both have dipped under that four-minute barrier. Principe is taking another shot at the record here, after a surprise upset loss at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix three weeks ago. Now, rested and ready to run, the barrier better watch out.
The mark would become even more significant for Principe, with the passing of Larry Byrne earlier in the week. Byrne, who was a Rhode Island native for many years, was a big fan of the La Salle program. Not only that, he served as the high school selector for Millrose's boys mile for a span of 34 years.
Also in the field will be local Mikey Brannigan, who recently set a Paralympic world record, as well as Princeton freshman Conor Lundy, who finished in the top five in the high school mile at Millrose last year. In the seeded section, you will have Andrew Hunter, who is the high school national record holder for the mile event.
