Corning Clinches Course Record Sweep - McDaniel Baxter Pre-State Recap

Girls Race 6  Individual

Notes: Judging by the entries alone, this was set to be the match up of the season, so far.  The race didn't disappoint, as Jessica Lawson found her stiffest competition yet since the graduation of fellow Section 4 athlete, Abbey Wheeler.  Despite pressing from new names on the scene like Hannah Butler and Brooke Rauber, Lawson was able to clear all other runners except one: Katelyn Tuohy.  The now freshman stayed on Lawson through 2-Mile, although the gap had expanded.  Tuohy is quite comparable to how Lawson was running as a freshman, so Jessica knew what the 9th grader was capable of.  With the threat looming, Lawson reverted back to her in-depth knowledge of the course, throwing in surges at all the right angles.  The pressure was put to good use, as Lawson extended her lead to 20 secs, looking up on the final straightaway to realize she was well under record pace.  Aided by the crowd, Lawson crossed the line hard, running 17:26.4 to break her own course record by nearly seven seconds.  The record had stood for nearly a decade prior, set by Molly Huddle in HS.  Even though the conditions were more than conducive to record times, the manner in which it was run bodes very well for the rest of the season.

Girls Race 6 Team

Notes: If Lawson was impressive as an individual, North Rockland was equally so as a team.  Yes, Katelyn Tuohy ran exceptionally well to take the second fastest time of the day, but North Rockland also managed to put two more in the Top 5.  Their Top 5 runners were all in the Top 10 in the race, with their displacing 6th in the Top 15.  Corning as a team is the sectional favorite for Section 4, but struggled to match the compression of North Rockland.  Rockland was able to finish 80 points ahead of third place in the merge, meaning they could very well be in contention for an automatic slot at NXN-NY.
