Jennifer Clayton, 15, shattered her own Section I record in the long jump, with a leap of 6.34 meters (20 feet 9.75 inches). Competing in the Intermediate Girls (15-16-year-olds) long jump at the Region 1 Junior Olympics Outdoor Championships, at Icahn Stadium, on Randall's Island, Clayton's record-breaking effort came on her third jump of the competition, after she had jumped 6.22 meters (20 feet 5 inches) on her second attempt. Unfortunately, there was no operative wind gauge at the time of the jumps, and, therefore, although both surpass the national youth record (6.16 meters, or 20 feet 2.5 inches) for her age group, the mark cannot be accepted offcially.
Clayton also triple jumped 11.89 meters (39 feet 0.25 inch) to win that event, as well. Her older sister, Janelle, won the Young Women's (17-18-year-olds) high jump with her best height of the year, 1.72 meters (5 feet 7.75 inches).
Both girls now advance to the USATF National Junior Olympic T&F Championships, to be held at Burke High School, in Omaha, Nebraska, from July 22-July 27.
