State of the Action: With the unseeded heat running 2:59, the top seeds couldn't let the race turn into a kick. Sammy Watson, most known for her kick, was on the outside stagger, however, the inside stagger wasn't letting the race go out slow. Alex Harris and Amelia Mahoney pushed the pace hard from the gun, and had a significant lead by the break point, so much so that Watson, who had led her outside box more conservative, was four seconds back at 200m. Recognizing the race pulling away, Watson moved back into contention in the following lap, Kaitlyn Ryan seeing the same move through. Once at the front, Watson removed any questions about how conservative she would race, saving some for the 600m. She began to power away from the field, putting together a two second gap on second place with 200m to go. Watson came across strong for her first title of the day. The race was on for second place, a race within itself, as Alex Harris was shoulder to shoulder with Kaitlyn Ryan, who had beaten her at State Quals. The two came across the line together, with Harris getting the narrow margin of victory. | |||||
