State of the Action: It was all about choices for Steve Neumaier. He had run 4:16 in the mile earlier in the year, and couldn't decide which event to contest at States. Ultimately, it was his strong race at Brockport over 1000m that drove him to the event, as well as the mile being an option at Nationals the week after. The next choice was all about how to run the race. Sit and kick, and risk the title? Not for Neumaier, who led the race wire-to-wire. He had a two second gap on the field, maintained from the gun to the final 400m, when Jake Johnson, the top seed, realized he had to get in contact with the lead. Johnson chased Neumaier down lap by lap, until the pair was even on the finishing stretch, but Johnson ran out of room by only just, and Neumaier came through with the win, never seeing second place the entire race. | |||||
