New York, Jan. 14 – Many of the world’s top milers will be competing in the Elite men’s and women’s fields when the 13th edition of the New Balance Games is held at the New Balance Track & Field Center at the Armory on Saturday (Jan. 19) from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. In all, there will be more than 5,000 athletes.
There will also be outstanding fields in the high school boys and girls invitatational miles, and the girls 500 meters.
To date, 36 sub-4 minute miles have been recorded at the Armory, 17 of them at the New Balance Games.
The Elite Women’s Mile (2:10 pm) will see the return of Carmen Douma-Hussar (Canada), who was victorious at this meet in 2005, and took the Fifth Avenue Mile this past September and the New York Road Runners Midnight Run on New Year’s Eve.
She will face a strong field assembled by Race Director Ian Brooks including Sara Hall (US), who finished second here last year, as well as two-time U.S. Olympian Jen Rhines, who finished seventh in the 5,000 meters at last summer’s World Championships; Hilary Stellingwerff (Canada), now residing in Lausanne, Switzerland; Amy Mortimer (U.S.) and Megan Metcalf (Canada), third here in 2006. Also strong is Jo Mersh (formerly Fenn), the 2004 Olympian from Great Britain, who has recovered from leg surgery and has 1:59 800 meter speed; and Lillya Shobukhova (Russia), who ran an 8:27 indoor 3000 meters in 2006.

They will face strong opposition from Rob Myers (USA), Ryan McKenzie (Canada) and Neville Miller (USA).
The girls 500 meters (1:38 p.m.) will also be outstanding, with senior Chanelle Price of Easton Area High School in Easton, PA, who won the 1,000 meters at the Bishop Loughlin Games in 2:47.85, the sixth best all-time and a Pennsylvania state record, declaring she is going for the national record (1:11.44, Devon Williams, Towson Catholic in Maryland, 2004). Price will face senior Dalilah Muhammad of Benjamin Cardozo, the reigning World Youth 400m Hurdles Champ and the current US leader at 600m and 400 meters, and junior Charlene Lipsey of Hempstead, whose 2:12.40 in the 800 meters at the Marine Corps Holiday Classic is the U.S. leading time this year and who set a meet record in winning the 600 at the Archbishop Molloy Stanner Games Saturday (1:32.82). Price has the third fastest indoor 800 meters ever by a high school girl, 2:04.96, behind Kim Gallagher and Mary Decker.
