NY Relays To Blow Open The Early Season - Meet Preview

Girls Hurdles

Spotlight

100mH

The top three Hurdlers in the State will all be in attendance at the NY Relays (minus one unattached runner). Indoor State Champion Victoria Jones-Alleyne (New Rochelle) may have the slowest mark of the trio, but she has proven she is in for some rapid improvement. She nearly matcherd her 14.82 PR in the opening weekend. Alyssa Sandy (Paul Robeson) is the newcomber of the pack, with already the fastest personal best of the bunch (7.30). However, that was run at Aracadia (CA) and will be hard pressed to repeat in NY conditions. Rounding out the pack is Shayla Broughton (Medgar Evers), who comes in with a 14.34 personal best. The race should be fast, and with all three competitors only in their junior year, it's a race to play out in the coming years.

400m Hurdles

Four of the top 5 distance hurdlers are in this race, based on last years returning times. Emma Gallagher (Cardozo) has the top time, the only athlete under the minute barrier, with her 58.87. She has been able to utilize her speed in the past, but Cardozo's Coach Ray James has made a focus on better executing over the hurdles, which could make a big difference. Ellery Bianco (Saratoga) was runner up at the State Meet last year with a 60.06, putting the most pressure on Gallagher throughout the year. Her breakout race was at the Eddy Meet, but look for her to fire right from the gun in 2015. Debbie Boerke (Washingtonville) focused more on the speed aspect indoors, running the 300m, but will return as the fourth fastest in the state lats year at 61.57. Rounding out the top seeds is Crystal Green (Uniondale), who had her fair share of success over the short hurdles indoors.

The dark horse in the field is Olivia Weiner (Staples). This will be her first attempt at 400m Hurdles, but like many states in the US, she runs the 300m Hurdles In-State. Her personal best of 45.28 is above average even in the 300m open, and will look to equate to right under 60secs in the full distance.

Steeplechase

Reigning Champ Marissa Bartello (Laguna Hills, CA) makes her return to the big city, after placing 10th at Outdoor Nationals last year. Julia Stevenson (Hackley) and Caroline Starache (Saratoga) will do their best to bring the title back home, in what should be a competitive race.
