A brief note: the course records are by default since it was a new Varsity course this year. The distance is still 5000m, and the course is virtually the same. The only change being the removal of a flat section and the addition of a hill. This making the course more challenging. Taking that into account, the old course records were still broken anyways, making it more impressive. Both records remain with the same teams.

State of the Action: Elmira dominated the varsity girls race. Abbey Wheeler led the field, with Natalie Rogus of Corning on her heels through the first half of the race. Wheeler turned on the jets and dropped Rogus after the second mile. Wheeler went on to set a new course record in 18:08.9, and win by nearly a minute. Rogus began to fade towards the end of the race, and Skaneateles runner Kaitlyn Neal reeled her in, then passed her to finish 2nd in 18:54. Previous Course Record: 18:32.6 - Abbey Wheeler - Elmira Rogus led the Corning "SAT Squad", the group running at Bob Greene are academically occupied, and unable to join Jess Lawson down in Manhattan. Even without their McQuaid record holder, the group still ran well against a nearly full strength Elmira team. With their scorers all in the Top-10, Elmira came out on top 30-44. The Newark Valley Stewart Sisters dominated on this course Tuesday at the IAC divisional meet. At Bob Greene, Kayla finished a strong 9th, and Sophie 20th in a deep girls field. But Newark Valley lacks the depth in their 4-7th runners. It was a visiting Section 3 school Skaneateles that would take the C/D team title. Led impressively by Kaitlyn Neal in 2nd. |

Boys Varsity A | ||||||
State of the Action: On the boys' side, the race spread out between the top 4 runners very early, and the gaps remained virtually the same for the next 3 miles all the way to the finish. Jared Moore led the chase 10s back after the first mile, where he was joined by Micah Page. A few seconds behind that duo was Elmira's Ben Cardamone. Through the next mile and half, the order remained the same, with none of the athletes able to close the gaps. The course has a short but very steep hill in the final 600m, and that proved decisive for the podium places. Schaffer maintained his lead to set the course record in 16:21.2. Moore held on for second, but it was a surging Cardamone that managed to fight past Page to earn 3rd place, and a great result for the Elmira runner performing very well this season. Previous Course Record: 16:41.2 - Cody Brizzola - Maine Endwell Dan Schaffer has been quietly having a strong season for Maine Endwell, since they have raced exclusively in Section 4. He is the top ranked Class B runner in Section 4, and 6th in the state with a 179 speed rating. He has been running fast times virtually uncontested in every race. Maine Endwell is the overwheming favorite to head up to Canada....I mean Canton...in November. It will be interesting to see Schaffer perform there, as it may be his first test all season against a deep field. Maine Endwell had 3 runners in the Top-10, but a substantial gap to their final 2 scorers. With many of their top runners at Manhattan, the Jared Moore led Corning team had enough depth amongst their next group of runners to take the team win. Elmira narrowly edged out Maine Endwell for 2nd. On their home course, Newark Valley narrowly beat out Section 3 Class D powerhouse Tully for the C/D team title. Newark Valley top finishers were Chris Dutcher and Josh Blazey in 22nd/23rd. |

State of the Action: This race was all about Ithaca, placing 7 runners in the Top-10. They were running 1-6 for the first part of the race, looking primed to hit the perfect 15. While Noah Sorensen would go on to gap his teammates by nearly a minute and win in 18:08, Owego's Nathaniel Hodges was intent on breaking up the Ithaca pack. He steadily worked his way up, picking them off one at a time. He put in a strong effort up the final hill, and closed well to finish 2nd. |

State of the Action: There are high hopes for Aleziah Brooks in Elmira. She started the race a bit off the lead pace, sitting in 10th through 800m. She calmly went to work. Gradually moving up and completing the 1.5mi course in 9:45. There is no doubt that she will be contributing at the varsity level in the not so distant future. Horseheads ran well and crushed this race. Stopping Elmira from sweeping the girls races. A successful for trip for Skaneateles, they secured their 2nd C/D girls title on the day. |
