Perry's Pitch:

The shocker in the McQuaid-AAA race resulted in the end of a long era as Elmira moved to the top of the charts after its big win and Fayetteville-Manlius fell to 2nd even though its season's TR rates 9 points higher than the Blue Devils' score. Saratoga with a win at Queensbury and Shenendehowa with a 3rd in the McQuaid-AAA race are also pretty close behind the two leaders, so Class A is shaping up to be a much more interesting contest than was imagined in the preseason. Corning rounds out the top 5 after a 4th in the McQuaid-AAA behind Jessica Lawson's stupendous performance, and Guilderland stays in the #6 spot after taking 1st at the tough Bowdoin meet. One team making a huge jump was Monroe-Woodbury which won its hosted Crusader meet. Apologies to Shaker which was not listed last week due to a duplicated ranking spot snafu, but is in at #11 after a 3rd at Queensbury.

Kyle's Comments:

A lot of discussion and opinions went into determining the order of the top three teams here.  There is a rational for each of them to be on the top spot.  On paper, FM's numbers from their first four meets put them ahead of the state.  However, paper means little without execution, and its the outcome that matters at the end of the day.  In short, Elmira beat the top team that didn't run like the one that we ranked at the top.  Saratoga was our number 2 pick last week, and ran equal, or a little bit less to what they had already.  Therefore, Elmira and Saratoga look very equal at the top.  There is a rational to put Elmira at the top because they actually beat competition while Saratoga is still speculation, but in the same way we don't penalize teams for taking weeks off, we don't penalize those not in big races.  Shenendehowa made a big jump, and will be seen as well on the National Rankings this week.  If anything could be gleamed from the rankings, it is that New York may be looking at a legitimate shot at two At-Large bids, and that the perennial powerhouses of Saratoga and FM could very well be anywhere from 1-2, or at 3-4.  It's that close.  And why is it noticeable that Saratoga and Fayetteville-Manlius may not take home a state title?  Because between the two, they have been undefeated at the state meet since 1999, when Colonie took home the title.  Even still, from 1996 to 1998, Saratoga picked up three more titles.  And the kicker?  Who had the reign before Saratoga?  Shenendehowa was the two time state champion team in 94 and 95.
