2014 Season Overview for Class C
Space invaders have come to the formerly placid world of Class C and are roiling the waters and shaking up the scenery. One of the aliens, Greenwich, is actually a fairly recent C-creature since it returns from a two-year visit to Class D, and another, East Aurora, spent some time in Class C in the early 2000s. But the supposedly most powerful of the invaders, the fearsome nameless ones from Mount Academy, were only recently hatched and will be trying to establish their rule in Class C after having reigned in Class D for two years. New times have come to Class C, and the top three rated teams were competing elsewhere last year, leaving the old guard teams now to play catch up. The favorite in this year's class is a team only in its third year of existence, a Mount Academy team that always has a lot of depth and with top-20 rated runners Keith Baird, Baxter Wareham, and Martin Kurtz returning with veteran experience of winning two Class D titles and performing well among the big teams at the Federation meet. On the heels of Mount is an East Aurora team that saw its 6-year string of States visits in Class B broken in 2013 but now returns a young and hungry squad headed by its own trio of top-20 guys in Kenny Vasbinder, Matthew McLaughlin, and TJ Murray. The last of the three invaders is a Greenwich team that is headed by 2013 Class D champ Jeremy Spezio. Another transplant from Class B, Westhill, also enters the preseason as the 8th strongest C team. Ironically, for all four itinerant teams, the move for both the teams going up or down have made things tougher for them either at a sectional or state level. The old guard of Class C teams will need to scramble to fill out rosters to compete with the top three in the new order. Adirondack has top-20 guys Ryan O'Rourke and Connor Hrynuk back for a run at the Section 3-C title, while reigning States and S3 champ Holland Patent has Bryce Zayachek leading their customary building effort for a title run. Susquehanna Valley was the States runner-up in 2013 and will look to 10th-place finisher Richard Buchanan to head its 2014 campaign, and Dobbs Ferry has two top-25 guys in Grant Sheely and Takanori Okkotsu for the new season. The battle for individual honors may be unique in NY XC history as it features two of the previous year's States champs vying at the top. Rated number 1 is Plattsburgh's Jeriqho Gadway, who will be trying to become the second guy from the town to win consecutive States titles in the last five years following on Seton Catholic-Plattsburgh's Michael Champagne's second win 2009 (and Mary Kate Champagne won a third straight in 2007). Greenwich's Class D champ Jeremy Spezio should be right up there with Gadway, and East Aurora's Kenny Vasbinder and Port Jefferson's James Burke have the preseason numbers to be likely contenders for the title chase also. |
Bronxville's John Flannery and Plattsburgh's Jeriqho Gadway fought their way down the finishing straightaway in the States C race at Queensbury.
Section by Section Class C Overview
Section | Top Teams | Notes
1 | Dobbs Ferry, Pleasantville, Briarcliff, Bronxville | Reigning S1-C champ Pleasantville lost enough of the varsity to set up what looks like a close contest with Dobbs Ferry and a rising Briarcliff squad.
2 | Greenwich, Corinth, Fonda-Fultonville | Greenwich's move to Class C makes it the favorite in S2-C, though reigning champ Corinth could win out if the Witches have depth issues.
3 | Adirondack, Holland Patent, Westhill, Jordan-Elbridge, Hannibal, | The S3-C will likely be a tussle between Holland Patent and Adirondack again, with Westhill now possibly in the mix.
4 | Susquehanna Valley, Oneonta, Newark Valley, Watkins Glen, Chenango Forks | The S4-C contest has been heating up in recent years and this season's battle with Susquehanna Valley trying for a repeat title could be very good.
5 | Waterloo, Williamson Central | The usual S5-C favorites seem to have been wiped out by graduation, so maybe Waterloo and Williamson Central can emerge here.
6 | East Aurora, Alden, Southwestern, Dunkirk | The S6-C has a lot of top teams now seemingly headed by East Aurora, and it will be tough for the other three top contenders to find the Blue Devils' level of depth.
7 | Saranac, Beekmantown | Saranac may find just enough depth for a title with B-town losing its top two.
8 | Oyster Bay | Oyster Bay has its entire team back, so it should get a repeat title against whoever they're up against.
9 | Mount Academy, Onteora, James O'Neill, Tri-Valley | Mount should dominate in S9-C
10 | Gouverneur, Ogdensburg | Two teams likely set to battle here.
11 | Port Jefferson, Southampton | Port J has much more top level power but still needs to fill out much more at the back end. |

Mount did very well even against the big teams of Class A last year, so moving up to Class C from D shouldn't pose a big problem. The team has big depth behind Keith Baird, Baxter Wareham, Martin Kurtz, and Sidney Mommsen, and if there are any further big developments this year it will be a tough task for any team to keep up with them for the States C title.

With a team that included a senior and six sophomores, East Aurora had a down year was finally unseated from their Section 6-B throne. Now down in Class C with a Blue Devil crew that has a lot of experience, the team could be headed for two very impressive years in 2014 and 2015. States medalist Kenny Vasbinder and Matt McLaughlin and TJ Murray form the nucleus of what will likely be the only team to challenge Mount Academy this year.

The Witches had a great run to 2nd in Class D last year and Jeremy Spezio recovered from a downturn in October to capture the States title, but now up in Class C instead of being the favorites in Class D, Greenwich will be stretched. The Knights have won an impressive three States titles in their six visits there, and last year they developed a late-charging team that roared to the championship win. This year the task is much harder with the influx of new teams to Class C and an Adirondack neighbor that has its full varsity back, but Bryce Zayachek will be in the hunt for an individual title as he takes over from Barrett Celecki as the team leader.
