New York State Girls XC Rankings Week 8

New York State XC Rankings

Following Week of Saturday, November 2

Note: One week was skipped over here for the rankings as teams went to their state qualifier meets to settle the sectional championships. Many of the schools were running their last meets of the season as teams and had a chance to put a final exclamation mark on their year.

Rankings between teams within a section are based on the state qualifier results, as that is the best reflection of a team's current level. That does mean, however, that many good teams that finished further back at Sectionals than expected were hugely affected in the rankings. And at least one big Class A race seems to have been slowed down a large amount with a big field on a course with tight spots and sometimes slippery footing. Apologies to Canton, which should have been ranked highly in Class C for much of the year and debut here near the top of the rankings.

A final word to all. Sectionals are run to earn a place at States, and for some teams that is far easier than for others and does not require the big effort that was needed for teams like the top three battling in the Section 1 Class B race. If your team had a better speed ratings than a team from another SQ but is rated behind it, there are likely factors such as the season's body of work in play there.

Next Webster Schroeder, Sachem North, Arlington, Cicero-North Syracuse, Hilton, Ward Melville, Ithaca

Perry's Pitch:      Top teams such as Fayetteville-Manlius, Saratoga, Suffern, Ithaca, and Clarence ran to comfortable wins in their Sectionals. Section 5 had the hottest contest with Webster Thomas holding off Penfield and Rush-Henrietta for the championship. Northport won in a huge crowd at Sunken Meadows which seemed to adversely affect most of the teams. Syosset won easily in Section 8, but Valley Central pulled the big surprise by winning its first ever Sectional title as everybody came up huge for the Vikings in Section 9. The final spot was too tough to decide on pure merits and the coin flip landed on its edge. A team with a bit of a buzz is favored at States.

Kyle's Comments:      FM continues to improve throughout the season, stamping their ticket to States handidly.  Webster Thomas could be the dark horse pick for second at States, after a very strong Sectional Qualifier.

Next Starpoint, Hamburg, East Syracuse-Minoa, South Jefferson, Hamburg, Bayport-Blue Point, Homer, St. John Villa

Perry's Pitch:      None of the top teams going to States had an easy time of it at state qualifiers other than Corning. Queensbury outslugged Burnt Hills, Pearl River won a tie-breaker from John Jay-Cross River, and East Aurora was pushed hard by Sweet Home. Cornwall, Miller Place, North Shore, Pittsford Mendon, Westhill-Bishop Ludden, and Franklin were other ranked teams that survived SQs and will try to sort out who's the top dog at Queensbury.

Kyle's Comments:      The overall rankings are split almost evenly between Class A and Class B.  On paper, East Aurora and Pearl River are evenly matched, but with the weather forecast being not so different than NXN last year, East Aurora may find the edge.  Pearl River could still grab the title however, as it is anyones race.

Next Marcellus, Newark Valley, Saranac, CBA-Syracuse, Cohoes, Newfane, Fonda-Fultonville, Adirondack, Catskill, Irvington,

Perry's Pitch:      Bronxville continued on its trek for a 6th straight state championship with a win at SQs, widening the gap over Skaneateles. Canton should have been ranked near the top all season except for my oversight about classification change, and it joins Wayland-Cohocton in a group about a dozen TR points behind the Broncos. Akron, Broadalbin-Perth, and Friends Academy all got tickets to States and should be part of the top 7 teams there.

Kyle's Comments:      Canton, running as HC Williams, drops down to Class C, and screws up the order of things.  Class C just got a little bit more interesting, as the extra displacers may have a slight affect.

Girls Class D
Rank Team Section TR Avg. Last Week's Action Top Runners
1 Tully 3 99.0 1st in Section 3-D Crawford, Jaworski, Gambell, Bolt, Congelli, Murphy, Ward

15 Sauquoit Valley 3 62.8 5th in Section 3-D Jones, George, Kondielawa, Sciobar

Next Clymer-Sherman-Panama, Maple Hill, Watkins Glen, Haldane

Perry's Pitch:      The States Class D battle is shaping up to be one of the best races as Tully and a quickly developing reigning champ Maple Grove team are set to square off. Greenwich and Seton Catholic look ready to fight for the 3rd place position, but surprise team Keshequa and Norwood-Norfolk look set to be major players at Queensbury too.

Kyle's Comments:      It's a coin toss at this point for who will win the Class D race.  Tully emerged as the early favorite, but Maple Grove has long been developing to compensate from some key losses.  They two look dead even heading into the State Meet.
