WKND Recap: Post Season For Elite; The Year of New Rochelle

MileSplit NY - It was a great weekend for New York Track and Field.  Of course, the Indoor State Championship took place at Cornell University, and we implore you to check out all the action.  But the titles and accolades for New York's finest don't end there.  Check out some of the other top marks.

Mary Cain Kicks Her Way To History

Welcome to one of the weirdest races you'll ever see. High School junior Mary Cain was very clearly instructed to sit in second place for the race, and kick into the finish line.  What she didn't expect was that nobody, and we mean nobody, was ready to push the pace past her.  We're talking nearly three minutes for the first 800m.  By then, Cain knew she had sub-60 closing quarter speed, and the race ramped up, but there was nothing to stop the sixteen-year-old from gapping the field, and winning her first USA Indoor National Title.  Check out the race below.

Tully Alumnus Lopez Lomong Grabs The American Record

It would seem the American Record for the 5000m run has been passed around a lot as of late.  First  it was held by Galen Rupp had held it, then Bernard Lagat had taken it back at last year's Millrose.  Now the record passes on to the New Yorker Lopez Lomong of Tully, NY.  While most from the Empire State know Tully because of TullyRunners, Lopez Lomong is arguably the most internationally famous product of the upstate small town.  Check out what he had to say about the record in his personal blog, and watch the race below.

Jenn Suhr Vaults To Indoor World Record

Jenn Suhr of Fredonia, NY set the indoor World Record in the Pole Vault on Saturday evening, jumping 16-5.5 after securing gold last summer in London.  Congrats!

Walking Into History

Long Island has always been the home of Racewalk.  The New York State High School Record Holder, Maria Michta, has moved on to walking professionally, and has gone on to represent Team USA at the Olympics.  She proved her dominance this weekend after winning the event at USA Indoor Nationals.  Proof that Long Island knows how to walk, the Men's Racewalk was won by Tim Seaman, a graduate of West Babylon HS.  Read the full story below.

The Year of New Rochelle

We very rarely mention these sort of things outside the track oval, but sometimes, it really is just that good.  And for this rare occasion, we take a look at the year that New Rochelle has been having athletically.  Let's just say, it's going to be a good day at New Rochelle HS today.

  • They kick off the year with a Super Bowl victory, as former standout Running Back Ray Rice of New Rochelle, now a runningback for the Baltimore Ravens, comes home a hero
  • Next, they grab three state gold medal at the Indoor Track State Meet, as Ashley Wiggins, Briyah Brown, and the girls 4x200 win their events.
  • And finally, they have something that may go down as the miracle shot, as their high school basketball team stages an amazing win.  Check it out below.
