    The Eastern States Championship race at the Manhattan Invitational is meant to bring together some of the best teams in the country on a course considered a benchmark for evaluating distance runners.      SOMERS – The Arlington girls team isn’t hiding from the season’s expectations. They know the expectations are there. They aren’t hiding and coach Steve Arnett keeps it in perspective. “If dog bites man there’s no news,” he said. “Now if man bites dog, that’s a big deal.”

  • Mott Continues to Excel

    Story and photos by Tim Fulton NEW ROCHELLE - Coach Cap might look a little younger come Monday. The long time New Rochelle track and field coach, perhaps best known for making great hurdlers, has a new 400m hurdler on his hands. All American Elizabeth Mott, who placed 4th in the 400m at the National Scholastic Indoor Championships in 54.81, setting a new Section 1 Record in the process, is now running the longer hurdle race. Coach Capellan, or “Cap” as most of his athletes and colleagues call him, bet Mott that if she could break 66 seconds her first time in the event, he’d shave his mustache.     Suffern Invitational Suffern boys win first invitational in 8 years. Suffern's Shelby Greany leads mates to win. Tappan Zee's Emma Miller Bedell makes XC debut with strong 18:05 effort. Miller Bedell ran 2:08 last spring in the 800m. Cornwall boys and Shaker boys also win team titles as do the Warwick Vallet girls, led by Lillian Greibesland.     Heat Wave Slows XC Opening WeekendThe temperature was pushing 90 degrees in lower New York and the heat was felt across the state as times were a little slower than hoped for.  At The Saranac Lake Invitational, the time wasn't that fast but the outcome was as expected as Ticonderoga senior Lee Berube won his first invitational of the season with a time of 17:47.Left:  Victoria Pontecorvo (Tottenville) won the girls varsity race at The Rob Breen Invitational. www.wingedfootfotos.comRead More Highlights
