New York State XC Rankings
End of Year Rankings for 2012
Note: Many weeks down the road since the last rankings for the finals of the 2012 season's XC, we are making an attempt to provide a general summary of the team rankings. The Overall and Class groups were expanded to include more teams in tribute to all the work done by teams and runners. In trying to sort out the merits of each team's season record, the weighting factors used were: a) performance at States \ NYC Conference and Nationals for qualifying teams, b) performance at Federation meet for selected teams, c) performance at NXN-NY for participating teams, d) performance at Sectionals or LI division meets, e) overall year's performance at major invitationals, f) Tully Runner speed rating team averages, g) cool factor of uniforms. Note that Sections 8 and 11 were not able to hold State Qualifier meets this year due to the effects of Hurricane Sandy, and teams for States were selected from results at earlier conference\division meets, which are given less weight as these meets are not necessarily good predictors for Sectional champions (S8 girls A and S11 boys A States teams in 2011 were not divisional winners). TR averages are taken from November 19 compilations after Feds.
Cheers to all on another great season.

Perry's Rationale and Wrapper: | Although not a year of unbroken 1sts for Fayetteville-Manlius, the team still inexorably marched to a 7th straight national championship with by far the biggest margin ever at NXN. Saratoga rebuilt a bit and captured a 5th place at Nationals for a solid season. Rush-Henrietta, Warwick Valley, and Suffern mixed it up with each other in the States, Feds, and NXN-NY meets, but the Comets had the overall strongest results. Shenendehowa got an influx of young talent and made perhaps the biggest late season movement among the other teams.
Kyle's Comments: | The girls on Manlius do it again, and looked the best doing it. Their biggest margin of victory yet, it is safe to say they look to be the tops in the country. |

Perry's Rationale and Wrapper: | Though Holy Names was States champ, it's just too hard to to keep an East Aurora team off the top spot after it exploded in the NXN races and finished 5th in the nation, beating out even national power Tatnall as the top smaller sized school in the nation. Holy Names, Burnet Hills and North Shore led an impressive 2-3-4 finish at Feds behind Saratoga, and Nanuet gets the nod over Garden City with its 3rd place at States behind champ Megan Young.
Kyle's Comments: | A tough choice to make when looking at the overall season, both East Aurora and Holy Names look even to me. They won the one that is official, but East Aurora won the one with the tougher field. A good point of discussion. |

Perry's Rationale and Wrapper: | Bronxville's 5th straight States C win came without much drama as the Broncos rolled to their 11th state championship. Tully ended up pushing by Skaneateles at the Section 3 SQs more easily than expected and took 2nd at States, while a late-charging Newark Valley rode their usual cool-factor shorts to a 3rd place States finish and 4th place ranking. Fredonia dropped back a spot after its frontrunner had problems at States but still earned a spot in the top 5. After that things got a bit messy as a number of States teams had very off days, and Mattituck took advantage to leap way up for a 4th place at States and 6th spot ranking.
Kyle's Comments: | The Bronco's look to be the tops again, and will bring back many of their top 9 runners. Look out for them again next year. |

Perry's Rationale and Wrapper: | Maple Grove crunched down its 3rd straight States title fairly comfortably, though Greenwich took the top two spots but couldn't find the depth for a close head-to-head battle. The champion Red Dragons went on to an impressive performance at NXN-NY. States 3rd place team South Lewis and 4th place Notre Dame-Batavia occupied the 3rd and 5th spots in the rankings after strong season's finishes, and tucked in between was rankings newcomer Nightingale-Bamford, the winner of NYC's independent school's championship and big performers at Feds. 5th at States was a 9th-ranked Candor team that seems to recruit mainly from one family. A team to watch going ahead out in section 6 is a close replica of the 2010 Maple Grove team -- 12th ranked Silver Creek's oldest runners are two freshmen who hopefully were able to serve as experienced mentors to the three middle-schoolers on the Black Knights squad. (Note: teams with asterisked TR scores had less than 5 runners with positive numbers.)
Kyle's Comments: | Greenwich seems to have the front runners, but Maple Grove had the depth. Look for both teams to be present again next year, in line for another interesting battle to watch. |
