New York State XC Rankings
Following Week of Saturday, October 13
Note: Composing the rankings after the Manhattan Invitational is always a little complex because of the speed ratings boost that teams and runners appear to get there on the 2.5 mile course. Part of the boost is due to the higher level of competition, but overall the top runners who had run previous races this year saw a higher than average boost from their previous races, which is not a usual situation during the season, though it is pretty normal for Manhattan results through the years. The speed ratings are most accurately built for 5K courses. So if your team went to Manhattan and just jumped its TR ratings well over another team that did not and the rankings don't seem to be giving full credit by the TRs, that's why.

Perry's Rationale and Wrapper: | With both Manhattan events and the Burnt Hills-3 race in action for Class A, the weekend saw some monumental action. Fayetteville-Manlius opened its season with a 4th in the Eastern States race to put a TR number on its top position, and Nick Ryan almost got to the 200 TR level behind Edward Cheserek and Bryce Millar got to 190. Arlington won the big Burnt Hills-3 race to hold on to the #2 spot, but Warwick Valley had a crushing day in the killer Manhattan-F race and leaped up to #3. St. Anthony's and Walt Whitman were the second and third NY teams in the Eastern States race, and they remain solidly near the top after the strong performances. Other winners of Manhattan races included Chaminade, Baldwinsville, Calhoun and Liverpool. Carmel had the biggest climb of the week after it rammed its way to a 12th place in Eastern States behind Eric Holt and Benito Muniz.
Kyle's Comments: | The race for second place is officially on, as Warwick has been steadily moving up the rankings through the past weeks. While technically speed rated ahead of Arlington, it is yet to be seen if Warwick's fast times (pun intended) will carry over to the 5k. Unfortunately, we won't see that match-up at Section 1 Coaches, but we will see a strong Sibby Hanson battle with Carmel's Eric Holt for the first time. |

Next up: Glens Falls, Albion, Greece-Arcadia, Somers, North Shore, Fulton |
Perry's Rationale and Wrapper: | Team speed ratings got boosted last weekend, so if you were idle you risked getting left behind. But behind Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons which had a tremendous run in the Eastern States race to widen the lead at the top, it is still the McQuaid-AA race that is the guide for teams at the top. Franklin Academy had a nice day at Burnt Hills, and East Aurora won at Alden, but Class B rankings were fairly stable in Class B last week except for the move of Tappan Zee and Pearl River way up after strong efforts at Manhattan. And apologies to Xavier, who I had ranked in Class A last week, but after checking its enrollment the school appears to be a Class B team, and it debuts here at #8.
Kyle's Comments: | Bishop-Gibbons is entered in Section 1 Coaches, shedding light on their intentions of being a post-season team. Whether they are warming up for Fed's or NXN-NY is unknown, they will face strong competition. Behind them in the rankings are a tight pack of 5, who all could have the potential to place very highly in the state meet. Much like on the girls side, Pearl River finds itself in a dead heat with another Section 1 squad, and Tappan Zee will be racing Bishop-Gibbons at Sec 1 C&O. |

Perry's Rationale and Wrapper: | Collegiate continued its fabulous run of races with a 1st in the Manhattan-A race to close in on the 170 TR mark. Pawling won its own host race, and Fonda-Fultonville held off Rhinebeck in the Burnt Hills-2 race to set up another three-way battle for the NYS-C title at States. A team from Section 3 will likely join that group, but who will be the survivor of the sectional bloodbath between Holland-Patent, Hannibal, Adirondack and Tully is difficult to guess. Alden from Section 6 is also hanging close by and looking for a shot. I was alerted last week about the nice season being enjoyed by NYC independent Trinity, and this week they debut at #9..
Kyle's Comments: | Collegiate continues well, behind Buckley and Pompilj. Pawling looking to rule states as Col. takes Intersectionals. |

Perry's Rationale and Wrapper: | Barker had the best showing of the Class D teams last week as it won the Alden Small School race and boosted its TR to the 150.level. Other teams that raised their stock were Greenwich, Sauquoit Valley, and Southern Cayuga, who all had good showings.
Kyle's Comments: | Mount Academy are throwing in their hats with the big teams this week, as they will face off against Calhoun, North Salem, and Pawling, but the fact that they can even compete is testament to their talent. Will be interesting to see if a Class D team can eat up schools two classes higher. |
