First in a series devoted to the analysis and visualization of running stats. ---- Every fall tens of thousands of New York high school runners hit the cross country trails, and most of them firmly believe that they will be better than their younger and more foolish selves from last year.

The 7th running of the Boys Eastern States race at the Manhattan Invitational will pit some of the top ranked teams in the nation against each other in a battle royale. Twenty-seven teams will be toeing the line to see who can take Manhattan.
