MADISON, Wis. – Senior Katie Hursey paced the 11th-ranked Syracuse University women's cross country team that took first place at the Wisconsin Invitational. On the men's side, junior Steve Weeks was SU's top runner for the squad that finished fourth.

The women's team topped 20 other schools in the race to improve on its second place finish from a year ago in Wisconsin. Hursey (20:17) finished third overall in the 6k event in a pack of 202 competitors and less than four seconds behind the leader, Florida's Charlotte Browning. The Orange had three other runners finish in the top 20, including Lauren Penney (20:31), Sarah Pagano (20:41) and Catherine DeSarle (20:42).

Weeks turned in another strong performance finishing 14th out of 212 student-athletes in the 8k race. The No. 11 Orange was slightly edged by three other top 25 teams, including No. 25 Indiana, No. 6 Wisconsin and No. 23 Princeton to claim its fourth-place finish out of the 21 school in attendance. The Wisconsin Invitational marked the first competition of the season for junior Pat Dupont, who finished 34th with a time of 24:18. SU's other top performers were Tito Medrano (23:59) and Steve Murdock (24:04).

Head coach Chris Fox couldn't have been happier with today's performance by the women's team.

“Today was a big day for the women and solidifies them as a top 10 program,” Fox said. “The men ran well also. We got beat by some top 10 teams, but we will get better.”

Next up, the Orange will travel to Charlottesville, Va. to compete in the Panorama Farms Invitational on October 15 at the University of Virginia. Members of SU's squad will also make the trip to Terre Haute, Ind. on October 16 to participate in Pre-Nationals.
